Two Pulmonology residents from Marañón win awards at “NeumoMadrid 2022”

Irene Domínguez and Virginia Parra are the authors of the award-winning studies

Madrid, 31 August 2022. Irene Domínguez and Virginia Parra, senior residents in the Department of Respiratory Medicine headed by Luis Puente, have received awards at the Congress of the Madrid Society of Respiratory Medicine and Thoracic Surgery “NeumoMadrid 2022”, with both receiving second prize for Best Poster for  their respective studies.

Irene Domínguez received second prize for her poster “Prevalence and characteristics of COPD patients admitted for COVID-19 during the first three waves”.

The aim of this retrospective observational study was to analyse the prevalence and characteristics of patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) admitted to our hospital for COVID-19 during the first three waves.

The conclusions highlight a COPD prevalence among admissions for COVID-19 of 2.4%, mostly male patients who were overweight, with moderate airflow obstruction, a non-exacerbator phenotype and a high level of comorbidity. During admission, more than one third of patients had

complications and developed acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS), requiring oxygen therapy.

Virginia Parra’s study, “Prognosis of severe obstructive sleep apnoea in the context of acute hypercapnic respiratory failure”,  also received second prize for Best Poster.

The aim of the study was to assess the usefulness of diagnosing obstructive sleep apnoea during hospital admission for acute hypercapnic respiratory failure, measured by the percentage of adherence and its association with the incidence of new episodes of ventilatory failure.

The study’s conclusions establish that two thirds of patients diagnosed with severe obstructive sleep apnoea during admission for acute hypercapnic respiratory failure adhered to continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) in the long term, and its use should be recommended to reduce the incidence of new episodes of ventilatory failure.
