The Research Institute of Hospital Gregorio Marañón surpassed 7,700 impact factor points in 2022

Two new awards were presented for the first time, recognising the Best Communication with content on Animal Welfare and the Best Scientific Photograph from the IiSGM

The Gregorio Marañón Hospital Health Research Institute (IiSGM) exceeded 7,700 impact factor points in 2022, consolidating the growing trend in terms of the rate of scientific publications and their quality, becoming one of the most active centres in scientific production in Spain. These data were presented at the Institute’s traditional Research and Innovation Conference, which reached its 10th edition with the introduction of two new awards recognising the Best Communication with Animal Welfare Content and the Best Scientific Photograph of the IiSGM.

The aim of the event was to recognise the scientific work carried out at the organisation, providing a shared space for exchanging research and innovation experiences and results within the framework of the Institute. The opening was led by the Director General of Research and Teaching of the Regional Ministry of Health of the Community of Madrid, María Luz de los Mártires, the Managing Director of the Gregorio Marañón General University Hospital, Sonia García San José, and the Scientific Director of the IiSGM, Ismael Buño.

The head of the Institute presented the organisation’s scientific and financial results. "In less than a decade, we have managed to multiply the Institute’s overall annual scientific production impact index fourteenfold, from 500 annual impact index points to the 7,700 we have at present. I am very proud of our more than 1,300 researchers".

During the conference, the excellent work carried out by Thierry Bardinet as director of the Foundation for Biomedical Research of the Gregorio Marañón Hospital (FIBHGM) was recognised. He was presented with a commemorative plaque recognising his career at the head of the hospital’s research management body between 2011 and 2023. As part of his speech, he highlighted milestones such as the creation of the four IiSGM spin-offs, "for which there was no established path".

Communications

Following the presentation of the Institute’s scientific and financial results, the researchers presented 55 communications, both orally and as posters, and the traditional awards were also presented in the categories of Best Oral Communication, Best Communication with an Innovation Component, Best Communication with Patient Safety Content, Best Nursing Research Communication and Best Communication in Healthcare Innovation. This year, two new categories were also introduced: Best Communication with Animal Welfare Content and Best Scientific Photograph of the IiSGM.

Those attending the Institute’s 10th Research and Innovation Conference also had the opportunity to attend the round table discussion "Research Support Services (SAIs): key elements in the advancement of the IiSGM". The relevance of its different platforms and their impact on successful cases within the hospital were presented.

The invited lecture "Artificial intelligence in healthcare: challenges, opportunities and an example" was delivered by Antonio Artés, professor in the Department of Signal Theory and Communications at Carlos III University of Madrid and a researcher at the IiSGM, who focused his presentation on the latest developments, such as deep learning and generative artificial intelligence, as well as examples of multidisciplinary research using artificial intelligence.
