The Gregorio Marañón Health Research Institute reaches its highest number of high-impact publications since the ‘COVID-19 effect’

The Gregorio Marañón Hospital Health Research Institute (IiSGM) achieved 1,192 publications in 2023, 56% of which were published in high-impact journals (first quartile). The Madrid-based healthcare centre has thus once again demonstrated the growth in the quality and quantity of its Institute’s activity, consolidating its position as one of the most active centres in scientific production in Spain.

These data were presented at the 11th Annual Research and Innovation Conference of the Institute, at which the best work in eight different categories was recognised in acknowledgement of the research carried out by the organisation. The aim of the event was to provide a shared space for exchanging experiences and research and innovation results within the framework of the Institute, both with the research community and the general public.

At the event, 79 presentations were given to more than 200 attendees and the traditional awards were presented. This year, as a new development, the Best Poster on the Culture of Care was awarded as part of the recognition given to distinguish the research carried out by the organisation.

The scientific director of the IiSGM, Ismael Buño, highlighted the organisation’s strong scientific results, which show that the past year became the year in which the most and best research was published after moving beyond the “COVID-19 effect” that occurred in this area in 2019.

The director of the Biomedical Research Foundation of Gregorio Marañón Hospital (FIBHGM), Teresa Fernández, presented the Foundation’s financial results, as well as its strategy and action plan, whose objectives are to improve internal processes, redesign the organisation to address current and future needs, and foster a collaborative environment that inspires enthusiasm and commitment among the organisation’s members.

Together with those responsible for the hospital’s Institute and Foundation, the opening was led by the deputy director-general for Research Evaluation and Promotion, Pilar Gayoso, the director-general of Research and Teaching at the Regional Ministry of Health of the Community of Madrid, Inmaculada Ibáñez, and the managing director of Gregorio Marañón General University Hospital, Sonia García San José.

Development of the conference

Following the presentation of the Institute’s scientific and financial results, the researchers presented their work both as oral presentations and electronic posters, and eight awards were presented in the categories of Best Oral Presentation, Best Presentation with an Innovation Component, Best Presentation on Patient Safety, Best Nursing Research Presentation, Best Presentation on Healthcare Innovation, Best Presentation on Animal Welfare and Best Scientific Photograph from the IiSGM. This year, these awards were joined by the aforementioned Best Poster on the Culture of Care.

The invited presentation, “The patient at the centre of clinical research and innovation”, was given by Pascual Balsalobre, executive director of the Spanish Haematopoietic Transplantation and Cell Therapy Group, who shared his perspective on health research from different areas.

Attendees also had the opportunity to attend a Round Table on healthcare innovation, moderated by Manuel Desco, head of the Experimental Medicine and Surgery Department at Gregorio Marañón Hospital. In addition, the event served as the launch event for the presentation of the new IiSGM Research and Innovation Group in Healthcare Management, a pioneer in incorporating this area from the perspective of research methodology.
