The IiSGM organizes various activities to mark the International Day of Women and Girls in Science
To mark International Day of Women and Girls in Science, the Gregorio Marañón Hospital Health Research Institute (IiSGM) has organised various activities. The aim is therefore to raise awareness of all those initiatives that promote STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) careers.
In 2015, the United Nations General Assembly proclaimed this observance with the aim of promoting full and equal access to and participation in science for women and girls, as well as achieving gender equality.
One of the initiatives carried out was a meeting between young patients at the centre and four of its female researchers to encourage girls to pursue careers in science. Lucía, Julieta, Carmen and Yulie, aged between 8 and 17, asked Estela Gómez, Cristina Mata, María Guembe and Sandra Gómez what their most important work involves.
In this way, the young girls were able to learn first-hand about the work carried out by the centre’s professionals, who conduct innovative research closely connected with patient care.
In addition, IiSGM researchers María Luisa Soto, María Guembe, Carolina Martínez Laperche and María Victoria Gómez-Gaviro organised visits to their laboratories and gave talks on biomedical imaging and the brain, how to become a scientist, the importance of genes in cancer and research into transparent organs.
