The appointment is part of the centre’s 2022–2026 Strategic Plan

The Gregorio Marañón Hospital Health Research Institute (IiSGM) has appointed Dr Rubén Pérez-Mañanes as its new deputy scientific director with responsibility for innovation. This appointment forms part of the Institute’s 2022–2026 Strategic Plan and reinforces its commitment to research and innovation excellence, focused on patients and aimed at generating clinical and social impact.

Pérez-Mañanes is an orthopaedic oncology surgeon at Gregorio Marañón General University Hospital, an IiSGM researcher and an associate professor at the Complutense University of Madrid (UCM). In the field of healthcare, he works in the CSUR for sarcomas and is the founder and coordinator of the Advanced Planning and 3D Manufacturing Unit (UPAM3D), a pioneering initiative that integrates clinical engineering, advanced planning and 3D printing into healthcare practice. He also chairs the hospital’s Clinical 3D Printing and Custom-Made Medical Device committees.

As the IiSGM’s new deputy scientific director, Pérez-Mañanes will take on the challenge of consolidating innovation as a cross-cutting pillar of the Institute’s scientific activity, aligned with its strategic platforms and the principles of quality, ethics, transparency and responsibility. His project is committed to people-centred, collaborative and value-oriented innovation that effectively connects healthcare, research and teaching.

The objectives for this new phase include promoting translational and participatory innovation models, strengthening collaboration with patients, professionals and industry, and encouraging the real-world adoption of solutions that deliver measurable improvements in clinical outcomes and patient experience. To this end, the deputy scientific director will promote multidisciplinary working methodologies, the generation of evidence in real-world practice and the development of controlled experimentation environments.

Academic and scientific career

Dr Pérez-Mañanes has a career that seamlessly combines clinical, research, teaching and knowledge-transfer activities. Recently accredited by the National Agency for Quality Assessment and Accreditation (ANECA) as a university professor, he is the author of 68 scientific publications with more than 1,300 citations and has taken part in nearly 40 R&D&i projects. In the field of teaching, he has been an associate professor at the UCM since 2017 and has supervised doctoral theses and numerous academic projects in medicine and biomedical engineering.

"We want to strengthen innovation that makes clinical sense, is safe and measurable, and genuinely improves patient care. Research and innovation must translate into value for people and society," says the new deputy scientific director.

With this appointment, the Gregorio Marañón Hospital Health Research Institute is reinforcing its scientific leadership structure and advancing its commitment to becoming a national and international benchmark in health research, innovation and knowledge transfer.
