29/12 FELIPE ATIENZA AMONG THE BEST SCIENTISTS OF 2016 (ABC)

Felipe Atienza, Cardiologist and specialist in electrocardiograms at the Electrophysiology and Arrhythmia Laboratory of the Cardiology Department of Hospital General Universitario Gregorio Marañón in Madrid, has developed, together with a group from his hospital and the Polytechnic University of Valencia, a vest composed of electrodes that makes it possible to detect the origin of arrhythmias without having to resort to catheterisation.

The patent offers a less invasive solution and a much cheaper way to provide patients with a better diagnosis when they suffer from this condition—around 10% of the population over the age of 65. It will make it possible to determine which patients may benefit from radiofrequency ablation, specify the appropriate type of procedure and identify the area to be treated without the need for an intervention.
